Sub-Zero EC50 and the Flashing Service Light: What It Means

A flashing "Service" indicator alongside EC50 both point to the same underlying cause: excessive compressor runtime.

EC50 relates to excessive refrigerator compressor runtime and is shown alongside a flashing “Service” indicator on the display — confirmed directly by Sub-Zero’s own support documentation.

The Flashing Light Isn’t a Separate Problem

It’s the visual companion to the EC50 code itself, both flagging the same excessive-runtime condition rather than two unrelated problems.

What Usually Causes It

A door seal that’s stopped sealing fully, a dust-restricted condenser coil, or a drifting temperature sensor are the three most common triggers, in roughly that order of likelihood.

Is It Safe to Keep Using the Refrigerator?

You can while waiting for service, but don’t put it off — the underlying cause typically doesn’t resolve on its own and can eventually strain the compressor further.
