Door Seal Care: Extending the Life of Your Sub-Zero Refrigerator

Door seals are behind more Sub-Zero service calls than almost any other single part — and they're also one of the easiest to maintain yourself.

If we had to name the single part behind the most avoidable Sub-Zero service calls, it would be the door seal — and the good news is it’s genuinely easy to look after.

Keep It Clean

Wipe the seal down periodically with mild soap and water — food residue and grease buildup can prevent it from compressing fully even when the seal itself is otherwise healthy.

Check the Compression Regularly

The classic dollar-bill test — close it in the door and pull gently — is a quick, reliable way to check seal compression at home.

Don’t Let the Door Sit Open

Extended periods with the door propped open (during a move, deep clean, or renovation) can cause the seal to lose its shape faster than normal daily use.

When Cleaning Isn’t Enough

A seal that’s visibly torn, compressed flat, or fails the dollar-bill test needs replacement, not just cleaning. Visit our refrigerator repair page.
